Tourtiere (French Canadian Meat Pie)

Tourtiere is a French Canadian Meat Pie, and something I remember eating every Christmas Eve at my grandparents house in Ottawa, Ontario, my Dad's family being French Canadian. When we moved across the country to BC, when I was 10, we continued the tradition. When I got married, with step kids, we carried on my beloved Christmas Eve Tourtiere tradition. This is the recipe my grandfather used (with a few tweeks from my Mom).

I make it every Christmas to give to family and friends... it was once of my Dad's favourites. If I wasn't lactose intolerant, I don't know how many I would give away, LOL!

Crockpot Split Pea Soup

SERVES: 4-6

INGREDIENTS

1 (16 ounce) package dried split peas, rinsed
2 cups diced ham
3 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 medium onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, plus leaves, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 bay leaf
1⁄2 teaspoon seasoning salt
1⁄2 teaspoon fresh pepper
1 1⁄2 quarts hot water or 1 1⁄2 quarts broth
